Chennayil Oru Naal – It is based on a real incident which happened in Chennai. But, it was first made in Malayalam with the title as “Traffic” and it was a huge hit. At the hundredth day celebration of this movie, Kamal Haasan, who was the chief guest, announced that he would remake the film into Tamil and act in it. Because of his schedule with Vishwaroopam, he couldn’t make it.

Since, the story is based on Chennai and has a wonderful message related with organ donation, Radhika Sarathkumar brought the rights and produced the movie in Tamil along with Listin. Most of the realistic movies will be emotional or documentary, but this one comes under the “Thriller” Genre.

Chennaiyil Oru Naal is the kind of film that gets made in Hollywood ever so often. More often that not, they are instinctively scoffed at by critics. This is a ticking time-bomb movie where characters race against time to finish a job. Even though the movie artificially manufactures a wee bit of tension without doing anything, it takes a tight screenplay to see things through. Taking place in one day, Chennaiyil Oru Naal features one connecting incident in the lives of four unrelated groups of people living in Chennai. And that incident is an insanely unrealistic task of transporting a heart from Chennai to Vellore in no more than 90 minutes.

Story:
The story is based on a real life incident in Chennai a few years ago, where an brain dead accident victim’s organs were rushed by road from Chennai to Vellore (170 km), after traffic police created a ‘green corridor’ ( of synchronized traffic signals).

Karthik (Sachin) is a journalist whose first assignment is to interview star actor Gautham Krishna (Prakashraj) , but on the way he is involved in an accident, caused by an agitated girl jumping the red signal because of eve- teasing. His parents Jaya Prakash and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan and his girl friend Aditi (Parvathi) are shattered when they realize he is brain dead. Meanwhile Gautham Krishna’s daughter Riya is on death bed and only a donor heart can save her. The parents finally agree but traffic police commissioner Sundara Pandian (Sharat Kumar) is reluctant to embark on transporting the organ since feels the window of transfer is too short. However, he rises to the occasion , and when a recently suspended but reinstated traffic cop Satyamoorthy (Cheran) volunteers to drive as a way of atoning for his past, the show is on the road. Television and fm channels closely track the van but it goes off the radar. The twist in the tale is caused by Dr Robin (Prasanna), who has his own inner demons to fight.

The climax is everything a commercial pot boiler can come up with .

Definitely worth a watch for its novel intent and the way it has been presented.

The movie does have some unwarranted frenzy towards the end and this episode turns out to be a bit far-fetched. But, the overall motive of the movie and the way it has been presented makes this particular episode just a minor blip.

Chennaiyil Oru Naal owes a lot to the solid performances by all the acclaimed actors in the cast. Cheran has the best role as the man who executes this high-stakes mission while Sarath Kumar is the brain of the mission as the city’s police commissioner.

Prakash Raj as the self-centered superstar, Radhika as his concerned housewife, Prasanna as the distressed doctor, Jayaprakash and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan as the grieving parents and Parvathi Menon as the heartbroken girlfriend are among the other notable performers. We also have Mallika uniting with her Autograph pair Cheran after close to a decade and Iniya’s role throws the script open to more tension in the second half.

Lookout for a surprise cameo by a Superstar who also promotes the cause of organ donation in the end as the credits roll.

Mejo Joseph takes care of the music and there are a couple of songs at the start as the premise and characters are setup. His RR is mushy and dramatic as per the demands of the script.

The cinematography by Shehnad Jalal shines in the accident scenes and also while covering the fast moving car on the highways of the state.

Mahesh Narayanan’s editing patterns add to the excitement and tension among the audience when we are waiting to see how all the characters are thrown into the mix by one particular incident. Interesting work indeed

On the whole, we have a movie which offers excitement and also educates us about a vital concept which can prove to be a life-changer to any of us in need.

Stop ! Watch! Go ! … Message in the movie

You enjoy the movie thoroughly thanks to some slick editing by Mahesh Narayan and slicker camerawork by Shehnath Jalal. Most of the crew , barring the lyricists Na Muthukumar and Arivumathi, had worked in the original film. On the downside, the film takes its own time to warm up, but it races to a finish in under two hours. The half a dozen songs fail to make an impression.

‘Chennaiyil Oru Naal’ is an earnest attempt by the entire cast and crew to make a meaningful film about organ donation.

what a convulted movie ! too much casting leaves one confused… also the script and storyline is very weak… with too many holes.. like for instance, the weather which is supposedly bad between chennai and vellore looks clear by road, also why a train was not not thought about… since the shatabdi runs between blore and chennai in under 5 hours and so definitely it can reach vellore in 2 hours… also no backup of police vehicle and no pilot vehicle in front of the SUV leaves one befuddled… and surya belting out a message for his fans to let the SUV go thru the kuppam is too corny and far fetched.. and also the police control room in chennai looks too sophisticated to be true…there are so many race drivers in chennai who would have done the job admirably than cheran who owns a derelict two wheeler (crazy isnt it).. also there was an emotional disconnect in the move.. the usual deja vu characters are a big let down.
FINALLY IF I WERE THE DIRECTOR I WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE HELP OF THE MILITARY CAMP IN CHENNAI TO DO THE OPERATION AND NOT ENTRUST THE JOB TO AN TRAFFIC CONSTABLE WHO IS ON A GULIT TRIP..

Ma’am i am a fan of urs. I wanted to see this movie in theatre very badly without any reason. Because i watch mostly all movies thro CD only. Yesterday (02/04) i went for a second show. Ma’am after watching this movie i decided to watch all movies in theatres only because ur movie gave me a lesson. And more over movie had a moral but a minute mistake (not noticed i suppose). When u shout at ur hubby (Mr.Prakash about ur child) u carried a folder but it said GOBAL Hospital. When u r in Vellore Hospital how come u had a GLobal Folder in ur hand.
    Movie was damn good.
    Love U Ma’am
