After Thuppakki, Vijay and AR Murugadoss have come together with sky high expectations from fans and critics. Kaththi is about Jeevanandam and Kathiresan, both enacted by Vijay in a dual role. The movie is a case of mistaken identity embroils an escaped convict in a fight against a large corporation intent on seizing a village’s land.

Story

The movie opens in a Central Jail in Kolkata. A convict has escaped and the Police seek the help of another convict – Kathiresan aka Kaththi (Vijay), to nab the escaping criminal. While helping the Police capture the former, Kathiresan himself escapes and comes to Chennai. After hooking up with a fellow criminal Ravi (Sathish), Kathiresan plans to escape to Bangkok. At the airport he meets Avanthika (Samantha) and it is love at first sight, so Kathiresan drops his plans of flying abroad. Late in the night, Kathiresan is walking with Ravi when the duo witness a person being shot at by a gang of rowdies. On closer inspection, they find that the guy who has been shot is an exact replica of Kathiresan. Wanting to escape from the Kolkata Police, Kathiresan assumes the identity of the injured Jeevanandham (Vijay) and plans on escaping to Bangkok again. The events happening around Kathiresan show to him that Jeevanandham is actually in the midst of a major legal battle between a huge multi-national and his village farmers. Initially, Kathiresan plans to make money from this conflict and escape with it.

It is at this juncture that being mistaken for Jeeva, Kathiresan is invited to an event where he is to be conferred with an award. Before getting the award, a video clipping on who Jeeva is, is played to all the people gathered at the event. Watching this video changes Kathiresan’s life completely. Meanwhile, being mistaken for Kathiresan, the injured Jeeva is arrested by the Kolkata Police and taken to prison. Who is Jeeva? Why is he being selected for an award? How does Kathiresan’s life change? The Multi-National Corporation’s owner Chirag (Neil Nithin Mukesh) is using his vast wealth and power to target something. What is it? To know the answers to all these questions, watch Kaththi on the big screens.

Vijay & Murugados have redefined the term ‘commercial’ once again and delivered a perfect diwali treat for the Tamil audience.

Vijay as Jeevanandham & Kathiresan has delivered a lifetime performance, and showed a brilliant variety in both the roles. Samantha is cute and complements really well with Vijay for 3 songs. Sathish’s one liners do not make us to ROFL, but it was enough to evoke much needed laugh. Neil Nithin Mukesh deserves a special mention for delivering the dialogues beautifully, and he fits as a chairman of an MNC.

Murugadoss has mastered the skills of commercial film making. He has raised the bar once again, and mixed the colorful elements in the right proportion of a social drama, and penned an excellent screenplay.

Music – Anirudh has proven what he could do provided if he gets a big movie in his hand. The crowd erupts whenever ‘The Sword of Destiny’ starts to feature, and the youngsters go berserk when they see his name, on screen.
Cinematography – George C William’s work is impressive. The jail breaking sequence, and the 360 degree flip inside the tunnel are jaw dropping.
Choreography – Shobi has understood the trap, rap, and kuthu genre to deliver a viral dance moves for all the three songs.
Action – Anal Arasu has taken an innovative route to script fight episodes. The pre interval block, and the climax fights are mind blowing.
Dialogues – Murugudoss has conveyed the much needed message to this generation via his brilliant dialogues, and made use of harsh facts to highlight the importance of water and farming.

Murugadoss has made use of Vijay’s potential and delivered a powerful social drama with a few twists in both the halves. The stunts are believable, and the director has succeeded in delivering what he wanted to.

A few logical errors in the first few mins, and the pace of the movie for the first 45 mins. If, Kathiresan can simply decode anything, why was he keep getting caught for 18 times when he tried to escape from the jail? Well, it is okay to play to the gallery, and cross the barricades of logics for a commercial entertainer. But the question is, how long will we have to say OKAY to these age old strategies?

Kaththi talks about an important national issue packaged as a racy entertainer.

Director AR Murugadoss is back to directing Vijay again, after their successful Thuppakki. The subject matter that he has handled is a very sensitive one
and is the need of the hour.

The statistics and the data and the enormity of the issue needs to be noticed by the people. After a steady first half, the screenplay becomes racy in the second half and gathers steam before blasting in the end. Vijay is classy and has differentiated very well between the two roles he has played – Jeeva and Kathir. Samantha is pretty and has scope to perform in the movie. Sathish has done a good job. Neil Nithin Mukesh, as the stylish, suave and cunning business magnate, looks perfect for the part.

Murugadoss delivers a strong commercial movie with a nice social angle, in true Vijay style !

Vijay has used this opportunity to play diverse roles in the same movie and proves his experience as a performer and as an entertainer. Kaththi is a strong movie for the actor Vijay.

A.R.Murugadoss has touched upon many issues close to his heart such as rampant corruption, farmer suicides, the plight of senior citizens, water scarcity, the workings of the sensational news-hungry media and also goes on to vilify the corporates and their aggressive expansion plans without considering their CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives. The one scene late in the second half, when Vijay delivers an intense monologue on the above mentioned issues, is a definite highlight in the overall scheme of things. But it does try to get a little manipulative as the director has played to the gallery to win the audience’s sympathy towards farmers and make us root for his protagonist.

The placement of all the songs leaves a lot to be desired, specially the much talked about ‘Selfie Pulla’. ‘Aathi’ is delightfully shot whereas ‘Pakkam Vandu’, though a different exercise doesn’t make an impact. But the dancer Vijay sparkles effortlessly in all these songs. Kaththi doesn’t engage consistently as some sizzling moments are interspersed with moments of restlessness. The length of the movie is another drawback.

To sum up, Kaththi is a grand production which rides on Vijay’s dual roles, the social interest angle and some impactful scenes which are part of the mix.

A lot of flab, but some solid masala moments

Murugadoss has never been an economical storyteller, but even by his standards, the early portions of Kaththi are remarkably flabby and dull. Instead of surprising us by cutting to scenes directly, he keeps laying them out for us, he keeps explaining them.

The film gets better as it goes along, mostly because Murugadoss rediscovers, midway, the soundmasala instincts that had apparently abandoned him earlier. A fight sequence where Kathiresan uses a bunch of coins is a superb bit of imagination.

The impact comes not just from the action choreography, but from the emotional resonance imparted by those coins – they were donated for Jeeva’s cause by displaced farmers who are now laboring as sewage workers and employees in sleazy wine shops. So when Kathiresan uses these coins against the goons employed by the MNC, he’s really drawing from the villagers’ struggles – he’s really fighting their fight. Later, he invokes the names of Periyar, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi and launches a civil disobedience movement.

What a grand idea. And what a grand masala movie might have resulted had these concerns percolated into the story at every level, had this film been as attuned to serving its premise as its hero and his fans.

Wonderful Movie with good social message. Vijay’s acting was excellent and indeed a different from vijay’s earlier movies. It is 10 times better than Thuppakki, and kaththi deserves success. We should appreciate the confidence of Murugadoss and his powerful dialogues supporting farmers and voice against MNC. Clean neat family entertainer and it educates the audience, this movie not only entertains only Vijay fan’s but also the movie lovers. The impact of Kaththi movie will atleast remain for 10 years.
In short “Kaththi is one of the best movie in Thalapathy’s career”. We wish to see our Vijay anna henceforth select these kind of movies rather than engaging himself in age old masala drama movies.

‘Kaththi’ a quality movie contains a very strong social content that portrays various issues . Significance is given to the problems of globalization and urbanization, it throws light on farmers struggle. A factor of Illayathalapthy mass quite assisted directors effort of reaching his message to every corner. Phenomenal and soulful acting from Vijay sir is an additional highlight to this movie. ANIRUDH a sensational young composer has delivered a rocking BGM and songs are excellent.
There might few logical errors, but a inspiring screen presence and dance of vijay sweeps away the loop holes.
On the whole “Kaththi will be the blockbuster” and it breaks the records of many other tamil movies at ease.

I am excited & enthralled to know that KATHTHI movie has created a history @ box office for its first day with 23.80 crore. Well it certainly feasible when illayathalapathy vijay playing lead in the movie. As far as movie is concerned, there are many scenes and action thats makes fans & audience go crazy…..Thalapathy at his best, and he shines in every scenes. He looks more younger as the day passes on, we must applaud the performance of vijay & variations shown for both roles. Captain of the movie murugadoss daring screenplay and powerfull dialogues brings social awareness among audience. It will be glad to see if this successful combo joins for an another venture. Anirudh’s well matured work in his profession is clearly evident in this movie. Huge applause and thunderous response from audiences whenever BGM is played.
