Romeo Juliet is directed by debutant Lakshman and stars Jayam Ravi and Hansika in the lead with music by D. Imman and cinematography by Soundarrajan. Lead actors Jayam Ravi and Hansika Motwani have previously worked together in Prabhudheva’s Engeyum Kadhal.

Aishwarya (Motwani) and Karthick (Ravi) are contrasting characters. Hansika is an orphan, working as an air hostess with dreams of making it big in life. She is determined to find a partner, who will shower her with all the luxuries of the world. She believes love is overrated and that it is money that makes the world go round.

Karthick is a middle class hard-working gym trainer, who believes in true love, marriage, family and children. His work as a personal trainer to celebrities gives him the opportunity to move among the higher circles of society.

Believing him to be a rich business tycoon, Aishwarya ensnares him with her charm and Karthick falls in love. But the minute Aishwarya discovers his truth, she kicks him out of her life.

Arjun (Vamsi Krishnan), a powerful business magnet, enters the scene with Nisha (Poonam Bajwa), and they are made scapegoats in this fight between the lovers. The constant fighting between the lead pair gets quite tedious after a while.

  1. Rediff

Predictable modern-day romantic comedy full of clichés.

The opening credits portray classic love scenes from films across decades, featuring actors like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith and Vijay and were greeted with thunderous claps and deafening whistles.

The film does have some fun moments, but overall meanders aimlessly with ridiculous plot twists. The climax is highly melodramatic that seriously tests your patience.

Lakshman’s Romeo Juliet is just a rehash of old clichés. He pitches love against money and there are no prizes for guessing which one wins.

  2. Indiaglitz

Keeps you entertained for all of the three hours

Ravi’s emotions ranging from the strength in his soft romance to the subtlety in his revenge, are all titch. Ravi still comes around as a manly charm. Hansika is the right cast for the heroine’s haughtiness. Although her ideas are practical, her behaviour is unreasonable – and Hansika has pulled this off, convincingly.

Background score, which adds an extra edge to the story. Colourful cinematography and screenplay, along with the thread of comedy throughout the story, make up for a thoroughly entertaining package. However, it is not necessary that every story must have a happy ending; sometimes, it is even a spoiler. The secondary love threads seem to have woven incomplete. But for these, ‘Romeo Juliet’ is an absolute indulgence.

  3. Galatta

Lovely romantic entertainer that will make you fall in love with it

Director Lakshman has taken up this genre and come out with a breezy and immensely enjoyable movie. Jayam Ravi is at his absolute best and seems to have enjoyed playing his role. Hansika has had a lot of scope to prove her acting talent and she excels with her emotions. The support cast has Krishna Vamsi and Poonam Bajwa and they impress with their roles. The surprise package is Shreya Gupta, who makes her acting debut with this movie. She leaves an impression with her cute performance.

Imman’s music has been well received and the ‘Dandanaka’ song is sure to have everybody dancing. Soundarrajan has filled each scene with so much colour that it is an absolute pleasure to watch.

  4. Aishwarya (Hansika Motwani) falls in love with Karthik (Jayam Ravi) assuming that he is rich. But, once she realizes that he is just an ordinary gym instructor, she leaves him and wants to get together with a rich man Arjun (Vamsi Krishna). With Karthik standing in her way and threatening to break her relationship with the millionaire, Aishwarya, is now forced to find a suitable girl for Karthik. Aishu finds hot Nisha (Poonam Bajwa) for Karthik. Aishu soon gets disturbed with the rich lifestyle given by Arjun. Aishwarya is now forced by Arjun to workout, make her handwriting very nice, making her hair style look so different in a song of Idharkuthane Aasapadhai Balakumari. In a temple, Karthik tells her that his engagement with Nisha is going to happen on the night before Valentine’s Day. At the same time Arjun along with Aishwarya plan to go to London. On the night she is supposed to leave, she realizes that she doesn’t wanna live this kind of robotic life with Arjun and tells him that she loves Karthik. She goes to the place where Karthik and Nisha’s are going to get engaged. She professes her love but Karthik refuses her as she had done to him and leaves the place with Nisha. But then a song plays and Karthik reveals all of this is a play orchestrated by Nisha and him, make Aishwarya realize her mistake and to make her realize her love for him. The story ends with Karthik and Aishwarya reunited.
