Thoongaa Vanam is a crime thriller film directed by Rajesh M. Selva starring Kamal Hassan, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Kishore and Asha Sarath. The film was jointly produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sri Gokulam Movies. The film is an adaptation of the 2011 French film Sleepless Night.

The film opens with an exciting drug heist staged by two senior officers CK Dhiwakar (Kamal) and Mani (Yugi Sethu). They flee with over 10 kilos of cocaine but their joy is shortlived.

Dhiwakar’s young son is kidnapped by Vital Rao (Prakash Raj), a dangerous drug dealer, who is under pressure to deliver the drugs to someone higher in the chain.

Dhiwakar is now desperate to return the drugs and free his son. But redemption is not easy and he gets sucked deeper and deeper into the mess. He gets investigated by two other officers of the bureau, Mallika (Trisha) and her colleague (Kishore).

With both the good and bad guys after him, Dhiwakar is slowly running out of time.

Almost the entire film has been shot inside a nightclub, where everyone appears to be chasing the other, without any success. Most of the fight sequences are shot in the kitchen. The rest is to watch and find out considering the genre of the movie.

  1. Only Kollywood

Thoongavanam is a frisky thriller which impresses despite its shortcomings.

There is a twist every 20 minutes in the first half, which wakes up the sleeping cell in your brain, making you think. The second half does suffer a bit from the predictability factor and no edge of the seat moments, but the exciting stunt choreography does make up for it.

It has been quite a while since Tamil cinema has belted out a completely serious fight fare, and voila – Kamal Hassan, Rajesh Selva and the team give you exactly what you ask for. Go, catch the fun.

    Class thriller

  3. 6/10

Definitely not your regular thriller, worth a watch

Director Rajesh has chosen not to stray from the crux of the story. There are no songs to mar the narrative nor does he waste time on unnecessary emotions. But there is plenty of humour to keep you entertained. There are no undue theatrics and the fight sequences have been intelligently shot.

The film’s only downside is the lack of pace. There are no edge-of-your-seat or nail-biting moments. It is a deliberately-paced film that fails to convey the sense of urgency or the underlying danger that could have made it more exciting. In fact, the narrative appears to be happening in almost real time.

The intriguing plot, good performances, innovative background score and camera angles make Thoonga Vanam worth a watch.

  4. An okay thriller, with goodies for fans

It’s a revolving-door thriller, with a breathless series of entries and exits. But for a while, the smoothness of the writing doesn’t translate to screen.

Everything comes together beautifully — the kitchen-sink action choreography, the sounds of things breaking and clattering, the bursts of background score, and the jittery camerawork.

Thoongavanam, both for the casual viewer as well as the Kamal-watcher, who will surely make a mental note of another “first” from the films of this actor:, the unflinching gaze on the contents of a water closet.

  5. Behindwoods

There are thrills and surprises worth experiencing in this Thoongavanam

With Kamal, the audience gets into the character of Diwakar. Trisha shows strength and agility, which is of great importance to the role. Prakash Raj portrays arrogance, feels fear and struggles with pain. Aman Abdullah, as Kamal’s son has a meaty role and his brief appearance is packed with wits and strong emotions!

With more films with Kamal Haasan, come great responsibilities and Ghibran seem to show no signs of strain in adapting with him whatsoever.

If one has to complain, it must be about the slight slow pace of the movie. On the whole, Thoongavanam, though looks to be a long night, is a happening one!

  6. Indiaglitz

    Complete entertainment guaranteed.

Director Rajesh has done his homework by giving importance to small details and designing the thriller even with so many characters around.

Tamil Cinema loves action, when mixed with the right dosage of twists, turns and stunts they embrace it whole heartedly. Thoongavanam is one such flick from Kamal’s den which rides high on stunt choreography, standout performances from its lead actors, fuses the right BGM, does suffer the predictability factor in the second half which slightly appears to increase the length of the movie, but the overall package is complete entertainment guaranteed.
